Purpose
The purpose of the Ashfield Rod & Gun Club, as stated in Article II of the club bylaws, is as follows:
“To promote the interests of legitimate sport with the rod and gun; to assist in the enforcement of all laws for the protection and propagation of the fish and game within this Commonwealth; to render assistance in securing such further legislation as may be needed for the protection and propagation of fish and game in the streams and cover in Ashfield and adjoining country; to conduct shooting matches and other sporting and social events and charge admission therefore in order to raise funds for the purpose of this Corporation; to acquire and hold or lease or rent as landlord or tenant any real-estate or personal property, or any rights, privileges or licenses, that may be necessary or convenient for the Corporation in carrying out its purposes."
Club History
The Ashfield Rod & Gun Club was founded in 1920, and incorporated in 1929. Club founders met at various member's houses until the current property came on the market. Legend has it that club members passed a hat at a meeting in 1929 and raised half of the purchase price that day. The balance was mortgaged and the note was paid off by raising Chain Pickerel and selling them to the state for stocking purposes.
